Trend Alert! Embroidered Organza
For the past few months, I've been seeing embroidery everywhere. Its on denim, leather, dresses, and even sweatshirts. I'm personally not the "trendiest" person in the world (I prefer trans-seasonal classic items that stay in fashion) but even I am guilty of looking into buying this trend. I actually have a specific item in mind - this gorgeously embroidered, whimsical gown by one of my favorite designers: Naeem Khan. The colours are fabulous and the embroidery doesn't feel at all too overwhelming, despite how busy the pattern is. The dress sits beautifully on the body while still feeling comfortable and not too stiff. Basically I'm obsessed with this dress and, if I had an extra $20,000 hanging around, I would buy it in an instant. (Unfortunately I do not).
So What Exactly Is Embroidered Organza?
Organza is a extremely light weight, sheer fabric that was traditionally made out of silk. Today we tend to use synthetic fibers since silk is extremely expensive. Unlike other sheer textiles, organza has a bit of stiffness and a little more body to it. The look of the fabric can vary, but generally for this style the fabric has a high shine and, at least in my opinion, looks like glass. The stiffness and structure of an organza makes it a perfect base for embroidery. The embroidery has really no limitations to the design - it can be as simple as a geometric or extremely intricate like the dress above. The end result is really a unique and beautiful textile; depending on the base organza's colour, the embroidery can appear to be floating mid-air.
Why am I Forecasting This Trend?
Spring is really a season about rebirth; it brings colour and warmth back after months of grey skies and cold air. Every winter, at least where I live, we spend months in either snow, ice, slush, mud, rain, and every other gross combination of weather you can think of. Studies have shown that people can actually develop depression from the winter season. When I forecast Spring/Summer, I always do it from the point of view of the person who has been through the worst winter ever and literally cannot even function because the bitter cold has taken away all the joy in life. Embroidered Organza is a magical fabric - even in the most basic solid colours it evokes wonder and intruigue. I know its strange to say, but this fabric can reinvigorate your imagination and breathe life back into your soul.
