Trend Alert! Solid & Sheer Organza

Trend Alert! Solid & Sheer Organza

I'm not exactly sure why but I've been obsessed with the ideas of different types of organzas for Spring/Summer 2019. I think the fact that the weather has been cold and grey lately has really made me want to see the lightest and prettiest fabrics I can think of. One of the brands that I look towards all the time for summery and bright inspiration is Kate Spade. Lively, saturated colours, geometric designs, and fun styles evoke such happiness in me and are present in all of her products. Today I'm going to focus on Solid and Sheer Geometric Organzas - while not exactly what Kate Spade uses, you will see the inspiration of this brand come through immensely with this textile trend.

What Exactly Am I Talking About?

I realize the subject of this blog is extremely long winded and not very clear. In my first Wednesday Trendsday blog I spoke about the jacquard weaving machine (long story short - it is a machine in which every yarn is controlled individually and can basically do anything). In this case, the organza is created on a jacquard and instead of a light weight, sheer textile, there are solid designs woven into the fabric. The designs are made solid and opaque so the final effect are geometrics (checks, plaids, stripes) that alternates with the sheer, classic look of the organza. The textile usually ends up being a bit more structural since the geometrics tend to be quite large, but also can be created in a way that the fabric drapes around the figure.

Why am I Forecasting This Trend?

In a world where we are fighting so desperately for women to be respected and treated equally, femininity tends to get lost. We are so focused on being strong and powerful that the idea of being "girly" is frowned upon and seen as week. But I think whats amazing about women is that in a world of black and white, we have this ability to really be expressive through fashion. Men don't have this type of freedom due to social pressures. We can play so much more with types of textiles, shapes, colours, etc.. and suppressing this freedom, just to appear stronger, is extremely disheartening to me. Don't get me wrong - I hope that by SS19, everyone is treated equally no matter what their gender, race, sexual orientation, or anything else is. But as a woman today, I think the freedom to embrace femininity without being seen as weak is extremely important and something to be celebrated.
